Decor with a little personality does not have to ask the whole room to revolve around it. The Hartwell Nut Bowl pairs deep, warm wood with detailed pewter trim, including a sculpted squirrel, oak leaves, and acorn motif that gives the piece its distinctive character. The contrast between the dark wood and silvery pewter makes the detailing noticeable, but the overall palette remains wonderfully restrained.

At 9 Inches wide, it has enough presence to stand on its own on a coffee table, console, bar, or entertaining surface without taking over the arrangement around it. Use it traditionally as a nut bowl when entertaining, or allow it to sit empty as a sculptural accent between gatherings. It is particularly beautiful for fall because the woodland reference feels seasonal without making the piece something you would need to put away once autumn is over.

      Design Function

A decorative wood and pewter nut bowl that combines practical serving function with sculptural detail, bringing warmth, texture, and a subtle woodland reference to entertaining and tabletop styling.

      Details at a Glance

      Material: Wood and Pewter
      Color: Dark Brown and Pewter
      Dimensions: 9 Inches Wide × 7 Inches Deep × 2.5 Inches High
Design: Wood bowl with carved textural detailing and sculpted pewter squirrel, oak leaf, and acorn trim
Design Role: Decorative Serveware + Sculptural Accent
Season: Year-Round; Especially Suited to Fall
Best Use: Coffee tables, consoles, bars, sideboards, kitchen islands, and entertaining displays

      Category Standard

The Hartwell belongs to the kind of decorative serveware we look for at Third & Main: useful enough to earn its place, but interesting enough that it does not need to be put away when it is not serving something. The dark wood gives the bowl visual depth, while the silvery pewter squirrel and foliage create contrast and a level of detail that becomes more interesting the closer you get.

What keeps it sophisticated is restraint. The woodland motif is concentrated at one side rather than covering the entire bowl, so it reads as a decorative object with personality rather than themed decor.

      How to Style It

Let the materials do most of the work. On a coffee table or console, the dark wood looks particularly beautiful against limestone, marble, cream upholstery, burl wood, and warmer metals. Give the squirrel detail enough open space around it that the silhouette remains visible rather than surrounding the bowl with several small accessories.

For fall, place it near one richer seasonal element—a burgundy branch arrangement, rust-toned florals, amber glass, or a warm brass accent. The woodland reference already gives you that subtle autumn feeling, so there is no need to add pumpkins, leaves, and other literal fall decor around it.

For entertaining, it would also be beautiful on a bar, kitchen island, or cocktail table where the bowl can serve its intended purpose and still feel like part of the room's styling.

      Where It Works Best

      • Coffee tables and cocktail tables
      • Entry and living room consoles
      • Bars and bar carts
      • Kitchen islands
      • Sideboards and buffets
      • Libraries and home offices
      • Fall and Thanksgiving entertaining

      Mel’s Styling Take

What I like most about this bowl is that the squirrel gives it personality, but the dark wood and pewter keep it from feeling cute. I would actually resist the temptation to surround it with other woodland pieces. It is much more interesting when it is the unexpected detail in an otherwise refined room.

For fall, I would place it on a coffee table or console near deeper colors—burgundy florals, warm brown books, amber glass, maybe a little aged brass—and leave some room around it. You already have the oak leaves, acorn, and squirrel giving you that quiet nod to the season. It does not need anything else explaining that it is fall. That is also why I like it beyond autumn: once the seasonal pieces disappear, you are still left with a beautiful wood and pewter object that has character.

      Pairs Well With

      • Burgundy and merlot florals
      • Autumn branches and foliage
      • Cream and ivory ceramics
      • Amber and smoked glass
      • Aged brass accents
      • Burl and walnut wood
      • Art and design books
      • Limestone, marble, and stone surfaces

      Good to Know

The contrasting wood and pewter materials are part of the character of this piece. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoid abrasive cleaners on either surface. Wipe spills promptly and avoid prolonged moisture or soaking.
