When Third & Main launched as the very first modern farmhouse home decor subscription box, we were firmly on the subscription train. But things change, and over the years, it became very clear that the subscription platform was no longer serving our members. For all their benefits, there are a lot of drawbacks to subscriptions. So we kept the benefits of your favorite Third & Main home decor boxes and kicked the subscription part to the curb—and our members couldn’t be happier! If you aren’t a Third & Main member yet but you do love a good home decor box, here are three reasons your seasonal home decor box shouldn’t have a subscription.
Too. Much. Stuff.
A monthly or even quarterly home subscription box means a regular influx of home decor, and that’s both good and bad. On one hand, having new treats delivered is always, well, a treat. On the other hand, do you really need all this stuff?! In the interest of keeping your Third & Main deliveries truly special and wanted, moving from the subscription platform to the one-time purchase means you’re free to grab our curated seasonal home decor boxes whenever the mood strikes. Instead of having boxes automatically delivered—whether you want them or not—you’re entirely in control of what comes, and when. We let you know when new boxes drop, and you’re free to order or not. It’s really that simple.
Quick aside: Managing too much stuff is the reason we launched Revive Decor, a marketplace where previously loved and fabulously cared-for decor items come to find a new home. It’s easy—sign up, send us your amazing decor pieces that you’re ready to pass along, and we’ll stage them for sale. At the end of every month, you’ll get a gift card for the value of your sold items.
No Canceling Required
With many subscription services, you’re locked in once you sign up. Sure, they might give you the option of opting out of a particular box, but that puts the onus on you. If you forget to log in and skip a box—easy to do!—you’re on the hook for paying for a box that you didn’t even want in the first place. Honestly, it’s a system that’s heavy on waste and irritation, which isn’t good for the planet or customer service.
A better format? You choosing what you want, when you want it. It’s fun, flexible and far more meaningful when you’re not getting a hodge podge of stuff you neither need nor want.
Zero Commitment
When you have the option of skipping a box in your monthly subscription, it might feel like you’re in control. But that’s a little like giving a toddler a choice between two shirts you’ve already picked out—we all know who’s really making the decision. It’s the same scenario with a box subscription. If you don’t actively skip or outright cancel, your card will be charged and your box will ship, and you’ll be left grumbling when you open the door to find it on your doorstep (again!). Honestly, it’s a level of commitment none of us need.
A one-time purchase, on the other hand, means you’re in control of what you buy and when you buy it. Have a soft spot for fall decor in particular? Positively drowning in Christmas decor? Great! Treat yourself to one of our amazing fall boxes and skip the holiday stuff. We get it! There’s only so much decor you can continually bring in before your home starts to look cluttered.
The Bottom Line
If you have subscriptions solely for the sake of having subscriptions, ask yourself whether you’re truly reaping any value in this scenario. Here at Third & Main, we’re always working to a need, and waving goodbye to the subscription model in favor of one-time purchases neatly addressed the issues our members were experiencing. Now, you’re the boss, in every way. So treat yourself when it suits you, keep the clutter to a minimum, and do the planet a favor in the process. Everyone wins!
